Lancers Wallop Wilson, Gain Deadheat for Title

Saturday, November 16, 1968 By Ken Pivernetz It's been a long time since Wilson High was beaten as badly as it was Friday night. The Lancers of Lakewood did all the damage, bruising and battering the Bruins, 30-0, to win a share of the Moore League championship for the second time in three years. While Lakewood had trouble getting its offense untracked in the first half, Wilson never got inside the Lakewood 30 and was held to 76 yards rushing and passing-its lowest total of the season. The 9,500 chilled fans saw two different games. Mike Rae's 28-yard field goal with 7:40 gone in the second quarter was the only scoring in a hard-fought first half. The final 24 minutes was all Rae and Co., as the Lancers rolled up 251 yards in every way imaginable. Plaudits have to go to Rae, who completed 16 of 21 passes for 188 yards. Sophomore end Rick Gillies, who caught a season high of 13 passes for 136 yards; hard-running Al Lemmerman with 147 yards rushing, and the entire defensive unit. They were at their best when they had to be. The Bruins were struggling, but still in the ball game midway through the third quarter when Lakewood's Bill Todd knocked down Bruin quarterback Jeff Burroughs so hard he had to leave the game, and was never able to return. After that, the Lancers scored the next three times they got the ball. The drives were almost the same. If Lemmerman wasn't going up the middle on delays, Rae was hitting Gillies on simple down-and-out or down-and-in patterns. Rae's TD pass to Gillies with 7:58 left in the third quarter was a perfect example. The 6'1", 193 pound senior faked a run right, then stopped and hit Gillies on a strike from 9 yards out. It capped a 60-yard, 12 play march in which Rae's 35-yard run for an apparent TD was called back because of illegal procedure. Lemmerman scored from 15 and 2 yards out, as Gillies caught six passes, in the next two marches. The score jumped to 23-0. The last Lancer score came after Wilson had gambled on a fourth down play from its own 38. Eight plays later, Rae went over from the two. Cal Clack, Scott Rollins, John Wilkens and Todd were defensive standouts for Lakewood. |
