Al Lemmerman and a stingy defense were the difference in Friday night's annual Lakewood-Millikan battle at Veterans Stadium.

Lemmerman did it all on offense, throwing for one touchdown on an option pass and scoring once on a two yard run, while grinding out 121 yards on 22 carries from his tailback position to pace the Lancers' 21-6 decision.

Except for the lone Ram score with 4:53 left in the game, Lakewood never allowed Millikan to make the big play when it had to.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Lancers scored two touchdowns on short drives in the second 12 minutes for the only points they needed.

Lemmerman, who had thrown only one pass in the first seven games, connected with Steve Krill on a 25-yard strike with 10:01 to go to climax a four-play, 49-yard march.

It was Krill's first reception of the season and it was the second time Lemmerman had burned the Lancers on the option pass. A first quarter Lemmerman to Don Richardson pass-run play had covered 67 yards and given the Lancers a golden opportunity on the Ram 14, but Millikan held that time and forced Mike Rae to attempt an unsuccessful filed goal effort from the 22.

The second Lemmerman pass burned the Rams badly as Krill was wide open. His only trouble was in fighting off the entire Lancer team, which came onto the field to mob the 6-foot, 170 junior. Rae's PAT, the first of three, made it 7-0.

Rae rolled out right and scored from five yards out with 50 seconds left in the half for TD No. 2. Lemmerman's eight yard run to the five set up the score. The Lancers had started the drive from the Ram 39.

Lemmerman was at his best in the second half, carrying the ball 15 times, but it was a 28-yard pass from Rae to Kim Hannaford that was the key play in the third TD march and set up the Lancers on the Ram 17. Lemmerman lugged the ball six times in a row, scoring from the two with 8:34 left in the fourth quarter to round out Lakewood's work for the evening.

Millikan then gave the divided crowd of 11,861 something to cheer about if they were Ram fans, scoring its only TD after taking the ensuing kickoff and traveling 66 yards in 10 plays. Rand Rasmussen passes to John Worthington for 22 yards and Stve Derian for 28 were the big gainers.

Scott Ward scored from the four after a penalty had set up a first down. Worthington had an outstanding night for Millikan, catching 6 of the 7 Ram completions for 117 yards.
