CIF Victories |

Lance Vol. X, No. 6Friday, December 16, 1966 By Bob McAmis This was the year of excitement at Lakewood, for this season was the first time in the ten year history of LHS that the Lancer football team made it into the postseason CIF play and made it in a big way. Entering into the prelims, the Lancers kicked off Santa Ana 20-13. From there they proceeded to the quarter finals where they battled Centennial. The result was 16-13 in a mudfest affair. The Lancers then progressed to the semi's and were beaten by a tough El Rancho team 33-14. This was the climax to Lakewood's greatest season. On the road to CIF semi-finals, the Lancers were undefeated. After boasting an awesome scoring machine and specializing in lopsided, devastating victories during the first half of the season, the Lancers reversed field and became known for hair-raising, thrill-a-second cliffhangers. The tide turned after the Lancers crashed over the 50 point barrier two successive weeks and were faced with a highly rated Poly team. The Jackrabbits held them to their lowest point total of the season 21-7. This was followed by a 14-6 squeeker over Millikan. At this point in the season, the Lancers were 8-0-0 and rated tenth in the state. Only one game stood between them and the Moore League crown which had evaded them for 10 long, ardous years.
Never before in their history had the Lancers defeated the Bruins of Wilson. The game proved to be one of the greatest in CIF history. From the opening whistle to the final gun, both teams gave all that they had. It was a seesaw battle with the final verdict undecided until the final 10 seconds when the score stood 33-28 Lakewood before a crowd of 17,423.
