Lakewood Freewheels to 42-19 Win Over Jordan
|
Press-TelegramFriday, November 1, 1968 By Ken Pivernetz Lakewood High built up a four touchdown halftime margin and then outlasted Jordan, 42-19, in a high scoring Moore League contest Thursday night at Veterans Stadium. Defense definitely took a back seat to offense as the clubs scored about every way imaginable. But the Lancers made fewer mistakes and emerged with a 2-1 league and 5-2 overall record. Jordan has dropped six of seven games this season. Lakewood was at its best in the first half, scoring three of the first four times it handled the ball and adding another TD on a 35-yard punt return by Kim Hannaford. Tailback Al Lemmerman, who played very little in the fourth quarter, did most of the damage in the first half along with sophomore end Rick Gillies. Lemmerman wound up with 115 yards on 11 carries and accounted for 46 of the 65 yards in a first quarter match that took only six plays. The 5-11, 195-pound senior bulled over from the one with 8:28 left and the Lancers were off and running. Lemmerman and quarterback MIke Rae stayed on the ground the next time Lakewood got hold of the ball in the early stages of the second quarter. Rae hit on his first pass of the night, a short strike to Gillies from eight yards out for TD No. 2. Gillies, perhaps the league's best sophomore in many seasons, caught a quick look-in pass from Rae moments later and scampered 52 yards to up the score to 21-0 after Rae added the PAT. Jordan, which couldn't get untracked in the first two quarters, let Hannaford get away with only 28 seconds remaining in the half as he scooped up a short punt on the first bounce and raced down the sidelines to make it 28-0 at half. Though Lakewood substituted freely in the second half, the Panthers didn't let up and made the game interesting. Jordan quarterback John Edwards dived over from two yards out in the third quarter and then had TD passes of 47 yards to Dennis Brimhall and 48 yards to Steve Helm in the late stages of the game. Helm, held to only 20 net yards on 15 carries against Millikan last week, bounced back in a big way. Though Lakewood knew he was coming on almost every Panther rushing play, Helm ground out 122 yards on 25 carries and had his hands on the ball all but seven of Jordan's rushing plays. |
