Matz, Ford Were Left in a Fog
|
Press-TelegramSaturday, October 25, 1968 By Ken Pivernetz No one felt more lost in last Friday night's fog than high school coaches Al Matz of Poly and John Ford of Lakewood. Though Ford was obviously the happier of the two after finding out his Lancers had won a 27-7 decision in the thickness that settled over Veterans Stadium, both coaches have a lot of bad memories about the game. "We found out later we had only nine men on the field when Lakewood blocked a punt that was recovered for a touchdown," said Matz. "Two of our players didn't know our punting unit was on the field, but you can't blame them, we were all confused." "They could have had 19 players out there for all I could see," laughed Ford. "What surprised me was how fast it came in. When we warmed up it was clear and then when someone told me in the locker room just before we came back that the field was covered with fog, I couldn't believe them." "Lakewood was able to make the third down plays and we weren't," said Matz. "It was a disappointing effort for us." TOP PLAYER Al Lemmerman has been named back of the week respectively by the Long Beach-Harbor area Trojan Club. Lemmerman gained a season high of 193 yards rushing in a 27-7 win over Poly. He will be honored tonight at the weekly Trojan Club meeting. |
